Statement

I become inspired when certain experiences spark within me feelings of intense emotion; Hearing the lyrics of songs, associating smells with particular memories, looking at photographs and seeing imagery I find beautiful. Looking then at paintings I’ve created – visual results of these experiences and emotions having filtered and evolved, I react to them in turn, and am able to gain some personal insight – often in the form of one or two overriding states of feeling; melancholy, freeness, reflection. . . Albeit these are mere abstract emotions, they are I think to some extent, part of the joy of making art. To set out with the express intention of conveying some specific content would, for me, stunt the process. Although my style may be seen as controlled and detailed, I feel my method is in a way fluid - I never have any exact preconception of a finished work, and hence, it expresses the ephemeral nature of my inner experience of life.
